Greetings from The Neighborhood Farm!
Happy Spring! The vernal equinox is today, so it
is now officially spring! It certainly feels like spring to us.
Even though its cold today, we have beautiful seedlings growing in
the greenhouse. We are cleaning up the garden beds, adding compost
to enrich the soil, fixing the fences to keep the bunnies out of the
gardens, and dreaming of all the wonderful vegetables we'll have in
a few short months. There are a couple of new gardens we will be
building in the next few weeks. A couple more gardens were started
last fall via the "lasagna gardening method" (layering compost,
cardboard, hay and other organic material and leaving it to break
down over the winter.) We'll pull back the hay and see what's under
there next week.
The best news of the day comes from Washington D.C. though. The
Obamas are putting a kitchen garden in on a portion of the White
House Lawn. They broke ground today - a fitting project for the
first day of spring. Visit the
White House Blog to see pictures of the First Lady and some
elementary students digging up the grass. It is a wonderful and
inspiring sight!
Our own vegetables will be coming along soon - hopefully by early
June. This year you will be able to find us at more farmer's
markets. We'll be attending the Dedham market on Wednesday
afternoons, the Hopkinton market on Friday afternoons during the
height of tomato season, the Roslindale market on Saturday mornings,
and *hopefully* a new Needham market on Monday afternoons. We'll
get back to you with more details as the season progresses.
