Greetings from The Neighborhood Farm!
I didn't expect to be writing again so soon, but an interesting
opportunity presented itself and I wanted to pass it along. One of
my favorite blogs,
Boston Localvores, posted information about two farms in
central/western Massachusetts that are organizing certified organic
winter citrus and vegetable shares. Most of us don't eat a strictly
local diet, and despite our best efforts to eat in season, we want
more than storage vegetables at this time of year. Food grown in
the southeastern US travels about 1000 miles to reach us, whereas
food grown in California travels about 3000 miles to reach us. Food
from the southeast is about 2000 miles closer to "local".
Enterprise Farm and Heavens Harvest Farm have teamed up with organic
farmers in the southeast and have arranged to have produce brought
directly from these southern farms to people in Massachusetts. Once
a week (for veggies) and once a month (for citrus) produce will be
brought up and distributed. I talked to Heavens Harvest Farm and
I've agreed to be the distributor for our area.
