Greetings from The Neighborhood Farm!
Do you remember the puzzle game with little squares that you slide
around as you try to reassemble the picture? There was only one
empty square which is what made it tricky. That's what our gardens
are like. They are packed to the brim, and we can't plant new
things until we take something else out. That has been the biggest
part of our learning curve this year. Planning for a garden like
this is a quite different from planning for a larger farm.
It is somewhat satisfying to rip one thing out and replace it with
something new though. Yesterday, we pulled out the early tomatoes
(goodbye Cherokee Purple, your season is up) and today we filled
those spots with kale, collards, and some Chinese cabbage. We also
over-seeded a mature salad bed with more lettuce, arugula, spinach
and mustard greens. As we pick the mature salad, the new seedlings
will be emerging and growing. We'll continue with this changeover
as the fall progresses, and hopefully we'll have a lot of greens
well into the cold weather.
As I mentioned last week, we are already working on our plans for
next year. To help us plan, we'd like you to take a survey about
your Neighborhood Farm experience this year. Click this link to get
to the survey: (survey expired).
This week, we will return to the pre-order system for some items.
Pre-orders help us gauge how much to pick, which helps us cut down
on wasted food.
